The name of the cave has an historical reference: it derives from the story of the queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who looked for a refuge in the locality where today there are the vineyards, following the arrival of Napoleon troops in Sicily. Later the author of the novel ‘Il Gattopardo’ designated the name of Donna Fugata to the properties that received the queen on the run. The history of this winery comes back to 1983, when the Rallo family decided to produce wines of high quality in the town of Marsala and in the vineyards of Contessa Entellina: up ahead the winery moved to Pantelleria, where the family started the production of sweet wines. The Donna Fugata’s wines explain the Sicily, and at the same time they are result of a work, that uses simple but well-thought procedures, respectful of the wines, vineyards and must integrity.
