Montepulciano is one of the most representative red grape varieties of Central Italy, grown mainly in Abruzzo, Marche, and Molise. Not to be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (produced in Tuscany from Sangiovese grapes), Montepulciano yields wines with great structure, deep color, and excellent aging potential. Wines made from this grape typically show a deep ruby red color, with aromas of ripe red fruit, black cherry, plum, and sweet spices. On the palate, they are full-bodied, smooth, and well-balanced, with present yet velvety tannins and good persistence. The younger versions are pleasant and versatile, while Riserva wines and single-vineyard selections offer greater complexity and aging potential. Excellent when paired with roasts, grilled meats, game, cured meats, and aged cheeses, Montepulciano expresses the authentic character of Central and Southern Italy at its best
