The history of the Coppo winery is closely tied to that of the town where it is located, Canelli. Founded in 1892, it was among the first wineries in Italy to vinify and bottle, under its own label, grapes from its own vineyards. In the early 20th century, Piero Coppo, the founder of the winery, began producing sweet sparkling wine, which immediately met with great success. A few years later, however, the winery passed to Piero’s son, Luigi, who introduced innovative techniques capable of overcoming the difficult post-war years. It was Luigi’s sons who later added Chardonnay and Cabernet vineyards to the family’s holdings, which until then had included Moscato, Barbera, and Freisa. The winery’s goal has always remained the same: to care for its vineyards in every detail in order to produce exceptional wines. Today, the estate manages 85 hectares of vineyards located in the Canelli area, benefiting from perfect exposure thanks to their position. Of particular note is the historic cellar: Coppo is one of four wineries in the Asti area known as the “Underground Cathedrals,” declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. These ancient cellars, built in the 18th century, extend entirely underground to a depth of 40 meters and cover a total surface area of 5,000 square meters.
