The Barolo Sarmassa by Marchesi di Barolo is produced with Nebbiolo grapes harvested by hand and grown in the vineyard of the same name, characterized by a calcareous-clayey soil with a high presence of stones. The Barolo Sarmassa has a beautiful intense garnet red colour. The nose reveals intense and composite aromas, decisive and spicy, with notes of dog rose, vanilla, licorice and tobacco. In the mouth, it is characterized by a full and enveloping flavor, important but well-balanced tannins. Elegant wine, with a pleasantly spicy finish, it is perfect to drink in combination with roasted and braised meats, mixed boiled meats, game and stuffed pasta.
The history of the Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo begins in 1807, when Carlo Tancredi Falletti married the French noblewoman Juliette Colbert di Maulévrier. Juliette immediately sensed the potential of growing the Nebbiolo vine on the gentle hills of the Langhe, thanks to the particular soil and microclimate. She also built magnificent underground cellars and bought large fine oak barrels, some of which, thanks to constant maintenance, are still used today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo were taken over by Pietro Abbona. After 6 generations they are still managed by the Abbona family. The objective of the Abbona family is to guarantee the typicality of the different vines and the characteristics of each vineyard, combining tradition and innovation for the production of wines of absolute quality.
