Idda Etna Rosso is born from the collaboration between two great Italian wine families, Gaja and Graci, united by their desire to explore and showcase the unique character of Mount Etna. The name “Idda”, meaning “she” in Sicilian dialect, is the affectionate and respectful way locals refer to the volcano, recognising its powerful and generous feminine nature. The grapes, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, come from vineyards in Biancavilla, on the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna, at an altitude of approximately 700–800 metres above sea level. Here, the volcanic soils, among the oldest in the Etna region, give the wine its distinctive personality, defined by freshness, elegance and remarkable minerality. Fermentation and maceration take place over approximately three weeks, partly in wood and partly in concrete tanks. The wine is then aged for 18 months in a combination of wood and concrete, developing structure while preserving the purity of the fruit and the expression of its terroir. In the glass, it displays a luminous ruby-red colour. The nose reveals a refined and complex bouquet of cherry, redcurrant, raspberry and wild berries, complemented by delicate floral aromas, spices, aromatic herbs and subtle mineral nuances. On the palate, it is fresh, vibrant and elegant, with balanced structure, fine tannins and lively acidity. The finish is persistent, with lingering notes of red fruit, spices and evocative mineral hints reminiscent of flint. An Etna Rosso of great personality, expressing with finesse the distinctive character of the volcano’s southwestern slopes. An excellent match for roasted meats, braised dishes, game, pasta with meat ragù, mushrooms and medium- to long-aged cheeses.
